MSNBC.com acquires Newsvine. Newsvine is a site that pioneered the social media and participatory news space. Offerings include contributor columns, user profiles, group commenting and conversation tracking.
Discovery Communications, parent company of the Discovery Channel, acquired the “green blog” TreeHugger.com for a reported $10 million. The site reaches approximately 1.7 million uniques a month and is ranked around 7000 by Alexa. The site has about a dozen staffers and it’s content is contributed by over 40 writers around the world.
Disney acquires Club Penguin, in a deal that could total $700 million. Disney said it would pay $350 million for Club Penguin, a virtual community that has soared in popularity since its founding in late 2005.
